Plants Plus Tinsel? You Can Do Better

Hey there Reader

If you’ve ever looked around your home in December and thought your plants suddenly look like… background extras, you’re not alone. They’re still gorgeous, still doing their little photosynthesis thing, but the rest of the room is stealing the show with lights and sparkle and noise.

And honestly, this is the one time of year where you can lean in and let your plants be part of the moment rather than sitting quietly on the sidelines.

So I pulled together a bunch of ideas that still feel modern and intentional, because I know you don't just want to throw tinsel on a pothos and call it a day!

Velvet Ribbon Wraps
A simple ribbon around a pot gives just enough festive feel without turning your plant into costume jewellery. You choose the palette. Deep green or champagne tones look amazing against foliage.

Seasonal Shelf Palette
If you group your plants by colour, suddenly the whole corner feels styled. Dark greens, burgundies, silvery foliage, even the terracotta pots start playing nicely together.

Fresh Eucalyptus or Pine Sprigs
If you’re someone who loves a scent, this is a beautiful way to make your plant nook feel cosy. Just pop a sprig on top of the soil and admire your work every time you walk past.

Gold Plant Stakes
This is for the minimalist who still wants a wink of festive energy. A simple metallic stake standing tall beside all that green feels so clean and intentional.

Accent Coaster Upgrades
Swap your usual saucers for marble or brass. (if real isnt possible a fresh coat of paint is jsut as good!) It’s subtle but instantly feels like you’ve elevated the whole space without buying forty new pots.

Winter Texture Swap
Maybe one or two pots get the seasonal treatment. Think smoky glass or brushed metal. It shifts the vibe without taking over your whole room.

Fabric Napkin Pot Covers
If you like the look of textile styling, this is such a quick win. Fold a napkin around the pot and tuck it neatly. Done. Stylish. Reusable... Don't have spare napkins? Use a gorgeous scarfe or two!

A Festive Plant Spotlight
Instead of lighting the tree, light the plant. A warm lamp pointed at your favourite one makes the leaves glow and suddenly they’re the main character.

The Moss Pole Tree Moment
If you’ve got a moss pole, you already have a tree shape waiting to happen. Add a tiny star at the top and try not to smile every time you see it.

Festive Pot Toppers
Red or white pebbles, cinnamon sticks for scent, or even a little decorative layer that feels intentional. Tiny detail, big atmosphere.

A Snowy Layer
Preserved white moss on top of the soil gives the softest “winter” moment without any fuss. It’s like a plant snow day, minus the cold.

Santa Hat on a Cactus
Is it a cliche? Yes. Will it make you laugh every single time? Also yes. If you want whimsy without going full novelty, this is the one.

Plant Ladder Display
Arrange a little tiered moment so your plants rise into a loose tree silhouette. Put a star on the top one. It’s so fun and oddly elegant.

Colour Blocking Your Pots
Pick two colours for December and group your pots that way. Even if nothing else is festive, this trick gives you an instant holiday focal point.

Bell Charms on Trailing Plants
A soft jingle every time you brush past. It’s the tiniest thing and yet people always comment on how magical it feels.

Holiday Coasters Under Pots
Think Nordic patterns or simple seasonal designs. It’s a tiny detail but plants love a good accessory moment.

So genuinely… which one or two are you going to try? 😃

I’d love to see what you come up with because everyone puts their own spin on these ideas, and honestly the creativity in this community always surprises me in the best way.

So if you do test something out, send me a photo!

I love seeing your space and your plants (and your face in the frame!). It makes the whole email feel less like I’m writing into the void and more like we’re growing together.

And while we’re on the topic of your plants being part of your home at this time of year, a quick reminder that I’ve already put together two guides that might save a plant or two while you’re busy living your life:

Don’t Let Your Plants Die This Holiday (Do THIS Before You Leave)

Short checklist, genuinely helpful, especially if you’re travelling or you know you’ll forget what day it is halfway through the week.

Your Plant's Winter Survival Guide

This one is for the cold climate crew. If you’re in Australia with me, you’ll store this one for later. If you’re in winter right now, this is your sign to grab it before the cold gets any sharper.

One more thing before I go

And before I wrap up, I’m opening up the first GROWS spotlight for next week, and honestly I’d LOVE you to be part of it because it’s always more fun when we get to see the real human behind the plant!
